Shaping America's Health

Our Mission:

Prevent and treat excess weight and obesity, and to facilitate a better scientific understanding of weight management.

Our Vision:

Become recognized as a leading organization in the fight against obesity by providing tools, programs, and processes that empower individuals, families, and health professionals, to build community environments that reduce overweight and obesity.

SAH Values:

Transform knowledge -- From science into action

Integrity -- Accountable & Measurable

Community Driven -- Real life happens at the local level

Collaboration -- At all levels. Together we win

Diversity -- Obesity touches everyone

Building on Positives -- Expand what works and lift up successes

Sustainable Change -- Self selection, local ownership, provide enduring solutions

No one segment of the community or one organization working alone has enough resources to reverse the devastating trend in obesity and weight management. Where individuals and community organizations join with the scientific and medical community with support from business and industry sustainable change is possible. The issues are complex and deeply rooted in American society and will require the development of significant partnerships to be successfully addressed.

SAH 2008 Key Strategies:

  • Build community capacity to support healthy environments.

Foster and translate the science of overweight and obesity.
    Consensus Conferences
This Consensus Conference will address the prevalence, severity and consequences of childhood obesity across race and ethnic groups in the United States to determine the impact of cultural, ethnic, biological and socioeconomic differences on prevention and treatment.
